How I Read So Many Books

Several people have asked me, ‘How do you read so many books?’ I’ve never given my reading habits much thought, but I suppose there are folk who consider reading seventy to eighty books per year unusual. So, I’ll do my best to come up with an answer.

Firstly, I usually have at least two books on the go at the same time – a novel, a non-fiction book or some sort of motivational text. At the time of writing this post, I’m reading ‘Peace Is Every Step’ by Thich Nhat Hanh and ‘The Gathering’ by Anne Enright. I began both of these books a few days ago, and I reckon I’ll have finished both by the end of the week.

Secondly, when I get up in the morning, before my foot touches the floor, I read for about half an hour, or how long it takes me to get through a couple of chapters. I usually read my non-fiction or motivational book at this time, as I find it sets me up nicely, and gets my creative juices flowing, for the rest of the day.

Thirdly, I don’t watch television. Well, I do, but I’m selective about what I watch.  That frees up lots of time for reading. I much prefer reading to watching television anyway.  So, in the evenings I work my way through whatever novel I’m reading.

Forth, I never go anywhere without a book in my bag or in my pocket. (Having an e-reader makes this easy.) I read when I’m on the bus, I read when I’m waiting to see the doctor, I read while I’m waiting in the barbers – you get the idea. I read at every available opportunity.

Fifth, I usually read for an hour or so, before I go to sleep. I take a hot cup of tea and my e-reader to the bedroom, get comfortable underneath the covers and read. (Again, having an e-reader is great. I can dim the lighting, and because the screen is illuminated, I can still see the words.) I find reading before going to sleep very relaxing, and I think what I read seeps into my subconscious while I’m sleeping.

So there you have it, how I read so many books.

Hope that helps.

    1. Hi, Sal. Thank you for commenting. Yep, reading is cool, so much better than television.

  3. I'm the same, even if I may not get the chance to look at it, I never go anywhere without a book in my bag :)

    All the best Jan
