The Price Of Takeaway

The more I keep an eye on my own finances, the more I notice other peoples spending habits, too.

Recently, I observed how many people in my neighbourhood get takeaway food delivered. Practically everyone in my street gets takeaway at least once a week.

“Well, that’s OK,” I can hear some folk say, “Who doesn’t like a freshly made pizza or a Chinese once in a while?”

Actually, I don’t, but that's beside the point.

Have you ever thought how much it costs to get takeaway one night per week?

I peeked at a menu that came through the letterbox a few days ago, and I was staggered at how much takeaway food costs.

The average price of a takeaway meal per person was £7.00. If there are four people in the household, that’s £28.00 per week, and that doesn't include the delivery charge. If you add that up over twelve months, it comes to a total of £1456.00 per year on takeaway food.

You could get a decent holiday for that amount of money.

Then there are the health implications, too. Takeaway food is full of saturated fat and salt, both of which are known to have a detrimental effect on health. Eating takeaway food and fast food have been linked to obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, strokes, cancer and depression.

I’ve got to admit, takeaway food is convenient – no cooking involved, you don’t even need to wash dishes if you’re prepared to eat the stuff out of the plastic container.

Personally, I’d prefer to cook and wash the dishes rather than pay someone a small fortune for the privilege of hardening my arteries.

  2. Very good advice. The Canada food guide has just been updated to advise on more home cooking. So saying, takeout is almost a way of life for most of us.

    1. Hi, Christine. Thank you for your comment. I do prefer home cooking. However, many people don't cook anymore. Takeaway food is very convenient, though it's something I advocate. Practically every other shop in our town is a fast food establishment, so it's becoming a way of life for lots of folk here too.

  3. Take-aways are popular and there are so many different types.
Growing up it was just fish and chip shops, and the meals were served in newspaper!!!

Nowadays there are so many different take-away restaurants for folks to enjoy and spend their money on if they so choose!

Personally, I haven't used one in years, I much prefer to cook food at home :)

    All the best Jan

    1. Hi, Jan. Thank you for commenting. Maybe there's too much choice. I remember getting fish and chips served in paper. It was a treat. Nowadays, it's everyday thing. I do much prefer home cooking, though.
